Gaming Style and Computing Performance Are Redefined by the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE
One of the larger screen laptops in the ChromeOS lineup with the newest AI features is the updated Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE.
The original Acer Chromebook 516 GE is replaced by this device, which was released in May. That older model caught my attention, mostly due to its 16-inch viewing area. However, I waited to purchase the non-Plus model a few months ago in the hopes that the Plus line would offer a better option.
In order to advance a range of more potent ChromeOS laptops with AI features that were unavailable in the non-Plus line, Google launched the Chromebook Plus category last year. The original Acer Chromebook 516 GE met most of my requirements, even though it wasn’t a Plus model. However, it lacked the improved build quality and performance of its replacement.
The integrated access to Google’s Gemini AI and the Chromebook Plus benefits, which grant access to extra unique apps and services, piqued my interest as well. Those were checked off by the new 516 GE. The idea of having a more powerful Chromebook for work and personal tasks combined with increased gaming capabilities makes this updated laptop an alluring choice.
Worth the Wait
256GB of PCIe Gen4 SSD storage, 8GB of RAM, and an Intel Core 5 120U processor with integrated graphics power this 16-inch-wide quad extended graphics array (WQXGA) model.
The “Gaming Edition,” or GE for short, is special because it offers cloud-based gaming features at a respectable frame rate. Despite not having a dedicated AMD or Nvidia gaming processor, the modified circuitry improves the speed at which games are delivered to cloud-based gaming servers without any lag.
With this upgraded Chromebook laptop, the wait was worthwhile. I purchased this device to enhance my workstation with a more adaptable and powerful laptop running ChromeOS and featuring a larger screen. Since Chromebooks rarely have screens bigger than 14 inches, I was drawn to the most recent model right away.

Since Chromebooks rarely have screens bigger than 14 inches, I was drawn to the most recent model right away.
The Chromebook Plus 516 GE, which retails for $649, is a good performer and has given me a significant improvement over my previous computers—both Linux and Chromebook models. When compared to other Chromebook devices at any price point, the larger laptop screen, Chromebook Plus moniker, and improved performance are hard to find in other devices.
Unbeatable Configuration Pluses
Acer hardware combines affordability and performance options in the perfect way. High pixel density and excellent image quality give it a premium advantage. Since I spend a lot of time on my keyboard, the 516 GE’s speed and comfort are two very important features.
Compared to the Intel Core i5-1240P in the previous model, the Acer 516 GE Chromebook Plus is equipped with a faster processor, the Intel Core 5 120U. Don’t be deterred by the 8GB of RAM that comes installed if you’re new to Chromebooks. No RAM strain affects the performance of ChromeOS, an enhanced version of the Chrome browser with built-in utilities to enable it to function as an operating system.
Impressive Audio Quality
I can’t say enough good things about this device’s significant audio enhancement. The audio quality of this Chromebook is superior to that of my previous Chromebooks thanks to its four upward-firing speakers, two of which are vertically positioned on either side of the keyboard. DTS Audio and Smart Amplifier technology deserve the recognition.
Sound from these speakers is devoid of distortion. Force-canceling woofers fired in perfect unison in opposite directions are used by the audio components to eliminate unwanted vibrations in the sound. Although it isn’t included in the configuration, I don’t miss Dolby Atmos. Excellent sound quality and a loud, consistent volume are offered by these stereo speakers.
Enhanced Display Features
With a resolution of 2560 x 1600, the 16-inch IPS 16:10 QHD 120Hz screen achieves 350 nits of brightness. High-end monitors and screens employ WQXGA technology, which produces sharper images with a higher pixel density than lower resolutions of 2560 x 1600 pixels.
This panel offers a better visual experience, more screen real estate, and more detail. Additionally, it has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which doubles that of the 60 Hz standard found on all other Chromebooks.
But it’s not a touch screen, is it? That seems like a very small concession to me. More ardent gamers, however, may find it frustrating that this Chromebook lacks a touchscreen if they want to play Android games.
My typical computing routine does not involve reaching across the clamshell to touch input on the screen, as this laptop is not designed to be a two-in-one. I don’t really need a touch screen, at least not for my purposes, if the keyboard doesn’t fold under or separate from the panel.
Superior Build Qualit
Chassis quality, keyboard dexterity, and touchpad travel are factors in lesser-quality Chromebooks that cheapen their appeal. The Acer 516 GE avoids all three, giving it a substantial physical upgrade.
Weighing 3.7 pounds, the new model looks classy in two-tone black. My only disappointment with the outer appearance is the smudge-fest on the smooth, glossy, obsidian black metal fame. Fingertip remnants do not easily disappear.
There’s no play in the aluminium frame. In the hand and on the fingers, it feels solid and unyielding. Additionally, the RBG backlit keyboard design is a strong selling point for office workers and gamers. There are many different colour and brightness options available.

There is one HDMI 2.1 display connector on this laptop. Since a second HDMI port would be helpful for connecting more accessories, I would prefer having two. It has one USB Type-A port, two USB Type-C (which support DisplayPort and USB charging), an Ethernet RJ-45 port, a 3.5mm headphone/speaker jack, and an Ethernet port.
It is not hyperbole to say that the 65-watt-hour Lithium-Ion battery can run the device for 10 hours. When I tested the fully charged battery, it ran out of juice 20 minutes shorter than the claimed 10-hour duration.
Compared to the standard Chromebook low-quality webcams, I was happy with the front-facing, full HD (1920 x 1080) camera, which could record 1080p video at 60 frames per second. But, compared to the third-party mountable webcams I typically use to replace the video cam on my Chromebook, its image quality is not as good. The blue glass lens feature and temporal noise reduction yield results that are passable but not exceptional.
Conclusion :
Among the best Chromebook Plus choices may be the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE. It fulfils two functions: it is a feature-rich all-purpose laptop for business and personal use, and it is an extremely competent cloud-based gaming computer. It can be used as a functional substitute for a desktop computer by adding a large external monitor and mouse.
My expectations regarding performance and ease of use were surpassed by this model. To set the Chromebook Plus device apart from the competition, Acer included essential features that were not present in the previous model.
Take caution if you choose to purchase this device. Its previous, non-Plus version is still available for a temptingly low price. Verify the following three details to make sure you are receiving the upgraded model:
It’s a CBG516-2H-59S4 model.
The build date is 2024, and the cover features the Chromebook Plus branding.
Acer intends to release this Chromebook Plus 516 GE in at least two variants, with the latter sporting a larger storage capacity, 16GB of RAM, and an array of colour options.
